THE award-winning Boston Children’s Chorus will take to the Theatre Royal stage tonight to celebrate the women who shaped the US Civil Rights Movement.

Their Australian premiere of She Persisted tells the powerful story of the Civil Rights Movement’s hidden women. The “emotionally charged” 90-minute concert, which includes Australian artist Missy Higgins’ song Oh Canada, is part of the Festival of Voices program.

Boston Children’s Chorus president and artistic director Anthony Trecek-King yesterday warned ticket holders to pack some tissues.

“We bring to light and celebrate the women who persisted and dreamt for a more just world,” he said.

“We don’t shy away from discussing difficult topics, playing with emotions and bringing out different aspects of life through performance.

“You’re going to be enraged, but it will also pull at your heartstrings.”

The group of 46 singers, aged between 14 and 18, touched down in the state on Wednesday. They have already put on a sold-out show at Government House and performed as part of the International Choir showcase at Hobart Town Hall.

Mr Trecek-King said the chorus harnessed the power and joy of music to unite diverse communities and inspire social change. “Our singers transcend social barriers in a celebration of shared humanity and love of music,” Mr Trecek-King said.

“Some of our singers have never been on a plane before, so it’s pretty special to be here.”

Tickets are from $45 to $68. For more information visit: www.festivalofvoices.com
