An Aussie influencer’s latest Instagram post has left her followers in fits of laughter – but others think it’s “performance art”.

Influencers are no strangers to making a bold fashion statement.

Still, Cartia Mallan’s latest Instagram post has sparked a hilarious reaction from fans who couldn’t help but point out an optical illusion in her outfit.

The Aussie content creator, who lives in London and has nearly 500k followers, recently shared a photo of herself trying on a white and red ombre gown for a London Fashion Week fitting.

The Di Petsa maxi dress appears to be unreleased and may debut on the runway at the brand’s upcoming show.

Other similar dresses from Di Petsa retail for over $10,000.

But despite the expensive price tag and high fashion label, commenters quickly pointed out that the dress’s colour placement strongly resembled a period stain.

However, Mallan, 26, was seemingly unaware of this fact, posting to her socials saying she thought it was “gorgeous” and that it made her “feel like a mermaid princess”.

One fan immediately commented that it looked like a “period nightmare” while another said it reminded them of “when I have a leak”.

And the quips kept on coming.

“Free bleed, but make it fashion,” remarked someone else.

“Looks like your period has spread,” was another comment, as was, “Girl, do you need a tampon?”

“It’s giving … period,” stated another person.

After seeing the comments, Mallan jumped in on the banter, responding to the tampon remark with the hashtag #freetheperiod, while laughing off another fan’s comment with, “HAHAHAHHA, why is this so funny to me?” – as if she hadn’t realised the illusion until now.

It’s unknown whether the period design was intentional.

Nonetheless, some people assumed that it was and praised the brand for the message it was sending.

“Goddess period vibes and I love it. It’s art,” wrote one.

Another said it showed “the beauty of being a woman”.

“It’s giving periods are normal and awesome! So beautiful,” said a third.

Another thought it was a “tasteful yet shocking statement” about the female body, as opposed to “whatever Kanye and (Bianca) did …”

Meanwhile, others were unfazed by the optical illusion and simply complimented the star for the “ethereal” look.

“This is insane,” said one woman.

“That dress is so beautiful on you,” wrote someone else.

“This is stunning,” another applauded.
