HOBART university graduate Emily Bremner will take a giant leap in her tourism career next week when she embarks on a three-month study tour of Denmark and Germany.
As the 2012 Skal International Tourism Student of the Year, Ms Bremner will undertake an internship at the Skal Tourism Institute in Denmark, a twin of the Skal Hobart club.
Ms Bremner completed her Bachelor of Tourism at the University of Tasmania's Faculty of Business last year, and said she nominated for the award to give her the opportunity to study sustainable tourism in Europe.
"I majored in Environmental Studies and Geography and I want to focus on sustainable tourism when I return to Tasmania," she said.
Skal Hobart president Alfred Merse said Ms Bremner was the third student the club had sponsored to Denmark and, in turn, the club would host its third Danish student later this year.
The award is now a category in the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania's annual Tasmanian Tourism Awards, and TICT chief Luke Martin said the state had a growing international reputation for sustainable tourism with products including Maria Island Walks and Rob Pennicott's Bruny Island Cruises.
"New products like the breath-taking Three Capes Track will further add to the Tasmanian experience and create opportunities for students like Emily to develop exciting careers," Mr Martin said.
The TICT is now calling for nominations for the 2013 Skal International Tourism Student of the Year award.
