‘Disgusting’: ‘Female-only’ parking zone in Aussie city divides

Apparently, the spots are at least "20% wider".

You’ve heard of ‘parents’ parking, ‘pram parking’ and ‘parents with prams parking’ - but have you heard of ‘female parking’?

A comedian on TikTok called Choccy Dan criticised a 'sexist' multi-storey car park in Perth's Pier Street, featuring wider car spaces designated for females.

In the clip, he walks around the female-friendly zone, calling it “disgusting” and demanding that the City of Perth be “held accountable” for their actions.

“This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen,” he says, pointing to the hot pink female parking sign. “There’s the blue parking over there, which is the standard parking.”

He then uses his body to measure the width of the different car bays before declaring that the female spots are at least “20% wider.”

“Sexist city, not on,” he concludes as he gets up off the ground and walks off.

Is this parking space sexist?

Commenters were divided on the clip. Some said it would make them feel more comfortable going back to an underground car park at night, while others said it would make them feel even more vulnerable.

“It's not about the widths of spaces, it's about being safe in the underground parking,” said one. “It’s so people can’t hide being cars. More open space = more vision.”

“This is definitely about personal safety,” said another woman.

“It's for like baby strollers, and it's closer to the entrance, so it's a little bit more safe for mummas and bubbas,” wrote a third. 

“I have a wife and two daughters. I understand!!! It’s the most logical thing I’ve ever seen,” one dad said.

"It's to keep women safe"

But on the other hand, someone pointed out, “Creeps will know exactly where women are parked.”

“Yeah, it’s more dangerous as they would know exactly where their targets are,” echoed a second.

And others agreed with the comedian, calling the move sexist.

“'I totally back you that it is sexist, not in this day and age City of Perth,” someone commented.

“This is embarrassing,” another user called out.

According to the Daily Mail, the parking bays are also fitted with brighter lights, emergency help buttons and are situated near exits. 

“The council said the move was made to protect the safety of customers from anti-social behaviour,” the publisher revealed.
