COFFEE highs are now possible thanks to Bentwood Coffee owners Chris Spillane and Megan McTurk, who have pulled off what countless others couldn’t – selling hot coffee and hot food at The Springs on Mt Wellington.

“People are pretty chuffed,’’ Mr Spillane said. “This had to happen for so long, they say.”

Their coffee-coloured van fits snugly next to the stone shelter under the towering peaks of Mt Wellington with the snow-covered pinnacle visible through the trees.

The van has been open since August 1, in time for one of the best snow periods in recent memory.

The heavy snowfall forced the couple to close for a couple of days in the first week but they’re not complaining.

In sub-zero temperatures they stay toasty with a pre-warmed coffee machine and a tiny heater plus there’s a roaring fire in the stone shelter.

The “outdoorsy” couple say they have sold out of hot food most days and find themselves busy after crowds have played in the snow and are on their way down the mountain.

“Everybody brings the kids to see the snow – this adds to the atmosphere,’’ they said.

The entrepreneurs haven’t had one bad comment about their van.

“There’s just been a whole lotta love,” they said.
