GET ready for a wintry blast of wind and rain later today, with snow expected to greet Hobartians tomorrow morning.

Much of the state experienced moderate winds overnight, with gusts on Mt Wellington reaching a peak of 130km/h at about 1.30am.

Mild conditions today are expected to change in the evening as west to north-westerly winds strengthen.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Matthew Thomas said gusts are expected to reach 80—100km/h across Tasmania ahead of a front crossing early tomorrow.

“A bushwalkers alert and sheep graziers warning will likely be issued for Friday’s

conditions, as temperatures will dip to the low teens and the snowline drops to 700

metres in central and southern parts and 500—600 metres in the southwest,” he said.

Winds are again expected to peak at around 100km/h in the south tomorrow.

Mr Thomas said there will likely be showers and small hail for the west, south and Bass Strait Islands and thunderstorms are possible during the day for the west and far south.

Conditions look set to ease on Saturday, but will remain windy during the day, especially in the south.

A maximum temperature of 12C is forecast for tomorrow, with 16C the top on Saturday.
