The best pie in Australia has been revealed, with a popular Victorian bakery taking home the coveted award thanks to a highly unconventional recipe.

Country Cob Bakery, run by migrant Cambodian brothers Chan and Ryan Khun, has stores in the Melbourne suburbs of Boronia and Springvale, as well as an outpost in the regional town of Kyneton.

The small business took out the top spot at the Baking Association of Australia’s (BAA) Best Pie and Pastie Competition — widely considered the definitive judge on the matter — in Sydney last week.

More than 300 bakeries across Australia put forward their best entries, but none could compete with the brothers’ Cambodian-inspired fish amok pie.

The fish curry pie is cooked with fresh Australian barramundi and is a nod to one of Cambodia’s national dishes.

“Fish amok or Amok Trei is a Khmer steamed fish curry with a mousse-like consistency,” the bakery wrote on Facebook after its win.

“The dish is usually served hot in either banana leaf or coconut shells eaten with steamed rice.”

Chief judge Stewart Latter praised the award-winning recipe for its crumbly pastry and “amazing” flavour.

Co-owner Chan Khun said crafting the perfect pie was all about making his customers happy.

“Our pies make people smile,” he said.

“That’s the main thing. Every pie we send out, the customer (says) ‘wow’, that’s the best pie (they’d) ever had.”

It’s the fourth year that Country Cob Bakery has taken out the top gong, after winning it three years in a row from 2018 to 2020.

If that list of accolades weren’t enough, the chain took out another two awards this year, winning first place in the Best Flavour Beef Pie category for its pepper beef pie as well as in the Best Mushroom Pie category for its Black Forest mushroom pie.

Customers from Canberra and Sydney can order the pies online if they’re yearning for a taste.
