A hardworking young dancer has died from a suspected seizure just hours after she was released from hospital, and her family is searching for answers about what happened to their “bright, kind and talented ” girl.
Layla-Maria Grubb’s devastated family are trying to piece together what happened in the last few hours of her life, after she was found unresponsive at home on Saturday afternoon.
The 18-year-old had been rushed to hospital via ambulance earlier that morning, after she suffered a seizure – the first she had ever experienced.
Her family say she was sent home not long after, only to suffer another seizure which ultimately claimed her life.
“We are absolutely broken, there is nothing that can take this pain away … Life will never be the same,” her mother Beth Ashton said in a statement to the Telegraph.
In response to questions about Layla’s treatment, a NSW Health spokesman said it was “not appropriate to comment”.
“The South Eastern Sydney Local Health District extends its sincere condolences to the family for their tragic loss,” the spokesman said.
“As this matter has been referred to the NSW Coroner, it is not appropriate to comment further.”
Layla had moved from Western Australia to Sydney to study dance full-time three years ago, and her teachers and peers at dance school Village Nation had become her second family.
Speaking to the Telegraph, Village Nation’s director Briden Starr said she, and Layla’s family, were devastated by her sudden death.
“She was not a normal 18-year-old – she was a healthy, positive, focused girl,” Ms Starr said.
“We all want to know what happened; we are searching for answers.”
She described Layla as the “sweetest girl” who had a huge impact on the lives of many.
“Layla lit up every room she walked into,” she said.
“Anyone lucky enough to meet her will know what an absolute angel she was.
“We are all so heartbroken, this is a horrible thing for anyone to go through.”
Layla’s family rushed to Sydney following the devastating news of her death, with Ms Starr assisting them in planning her upcoming funeral.
