Tom Wolfe says his life in recent years has been filled with “some incredible highs and some incredible lows”.
Tom, 33, and his brother Nick, 38, lost their mum, Lee, last year, only six years after the death of their dad, Malcolm.
But Tom and his wife Ally have also had the joy of welcoming their two young daughters – Matilda and Evelyn – to the world, and together Tom and Nick have continued to enjoy musical success with their band, The Wolfe Brothers.
Tom says it is this lived experience, both good and bad, that helped shape the band’s newest album, which he believes is their best yet.
Due for release on April 14, Livin’ the Dream is the band’s sixth album. The title track was released in October, and went to no. 1 on the National Country Music Airplay Chart. The album also includes the single, Here’s To The Ones, which is dedicated to their beloved mum.
The song honours the role women play in society, with Tom echoing a line from the lyrics: “There’s so many songs about a guy working hard, it’s about time the girls got one too’’.
The brothers spent three days travelling Tasmania to film the song’s video, which features real Tassie women, including police officers, firefighters, farm workers, sheep shearers, heavy machinery drivers, teachers, cafe workers, mothers, wives and grandmothers.
“This song is for our mum, and our wives Ally and Tani,’’ Tom says.
“But it is also for all of the incredible women who are as selfless, caring and loving as they are.
“Nick and I get to have this incredible career and do things we never dreamt of, but it could never have happened if it wasn’t for people like our mum and also our wives.’’
“I’ve got two girls under two, that’s a lot, you know. So this song is sort of for them, as a way of saying ‘we know we could never do it without you girls’.’’
The Wolfe Brothers captured the nation’s attention in 2012 when the band – then an ensemble of four – made it to the final of TV show Australia’s Got Talent.
Tom says the goal was to get the band’s music heard outside Tasmania and secure gigs at mainland festivals. But they got far more than they bargained for.
“We thought it might open some doors,’’ Tom explains.
“But boy, it opened a hell of a lot more than we expected. Here we are, over 10 years later, with six albums. We tour for a living, make music for a living – excuse the pun but we really are living the dream.’’
The award-winning band is now just Tom and Nick – the Wolfes are still great mates with former drummer Casey Kostiuk and guitarist Brodie Rainbird who both stepped back from the band to concentrate on their families and other pursuits – and Rainbird is still part of their live band on tour.
Tom says on the last couple of albums he and Nick experimented with different things, including rock and pop, but feels the new album is a return to their country roots. Nick has also stepped into a producing role for the first time, co-producing the album with Aussie music veteran Rod McCormack.
“It’s exciting,’’ says Tom, who still lives on the family farm at Neika.
“Musically, we’re both really excited about this one. I feel like creatively we are only just hitting our stride. Our songwriting is honest and it’s real and it’s raw and that’s what country music is about.’’
