Viewers praise ‘perfect’ new Netflix series ‘Nobody Wants This’

Could the humble rom-com finally be making a Hollywood comeback? Viewers of this “perfect” new Netflix series starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody certainly think so.

The humble rom-com is back.

After ruling Hollywood in the ‘90s and 2000s, the beloved genre took a back seat when streaming services hit the scene, while superheroes have largely dominated the box office over the past decade.

In a glimmer of hope for the rom-com fans out there, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell were credited for resurrecting the genre with their hit film Anyone But You, which made an impressive $220 million at the global box office following its December release.

And now, a new Netflix series which quietly hit the platform in September has earned near-perfect critical reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, as viewers flood social media with rave reviews of the “10 out of 10” show.

Starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, Nobody Wants This follows Joanne (Bell), a cynical dating podcast host who meets an unconventional, hot rabbi Noah (Brody) at a party.

Both on the rebound, the polar opposite duo find an immediate spark, fuelled further by a truly swoon-worthy first kiss scene.

But as they embark on building a deeper connection, the two are forced to navigate their differing views.

Creator Erin Foster, who loosely wrote the series based on her own love life, said she came up with the concept after realising “being happy is way harder than being miserable, there’s nothing to complain about, so I created this show based on all the ways that finding the right person can be so hard.”

After hitting Netflix on September 26, Nobody Wants This has clocked an impressive 93 per cent critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 92 per cent audience rating.

The show is also the talk of social media, with dozens of glowing tweets praising the “perfect” storyline, the chemistry between Bell and Brody, a scene-stealing extended cast and witty dialogue throughout.

“A rom-com that is actually romance AND comedy. Adam Brody levelling up to a place of hotness that I didn’t think could be possible. A first kiss scene that had me GIDDY!!!!” one user wrote on X.

“Do we love to watch a healthy relationship with actual character development which is also funny and the couple got chemistry and all? OF COURSE WE DO,” another post reads.

“Just finished nobody wants this season 1 … spectacular gimme 14 more of them right now,” a third wrote.

“I am begging you all to watch this show because I need season two,” another added.

“Nobody wants this is the most satisfying, refreshing and interesting thing I’ve seen on TV this year,” a fifth chimed in.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Bell, 44, said she was charmed by the script’s simplicity, which she found to be a genuine portrayal of real-life romance.

“I think one of the beautiful parts about this show is that it’s trying to show something real and entertaining. I don’t know that there’s an orchestrated, calculated statement trying to be made,” the actress said.

“I think this show is more experiential in a very realistic way, because I love the fact that [the characters] are not 20-somethings.

“I have so many friends that are 38, that are in this position of, ‘How do I date? Should I settle down?’ So this show is more of an experience than a statement.”
