Triple M radio host Dave Noonan has breakfast show axed

Hobart radio personality Dave Noonan will be taken off the Triple M breakfast airwaves after his show was axed in the second shock industry move this week.

Brian Carlton hits out at station management

MUCH-LOVED Hobart radio personality Dave Noonan will take to the Triple M airwaves for the last time next Friday after his long-running show was axed.

Southern Cross Austereo announced the Dave Noonan Show with Al Plath would not be returning in 2020 in a statement released late this afternoon.

The shock axing comes just one day after the turbulent early exit of Launceston-based radio shock jock Brian Carlton from his Tasmania Talks morning show.

Noonan, who has been on Hobart airwaves for 25 years, said in a statement it had been a “privilege” to have held his role for so long.

“I have loved being part of the Hobart community and we have shared many laughs and tears along the way,” he said.

“I am excited about not getting up at 4.30am every day.”

Southern Cross Austereo’s executive general manager of Tasmania Ally Bradley thanked Noonan for his contribution to the company and the Hobart community.

“Noons, as he is affectionately known, is the guy who hugs people on their first day of work to welcome them,” she said.

“Spend more than 30 seconds in public with Noons and you soon realise that everyone treats him like an old mate.”

Ms Bradley said Noonan’s “tireless” work with the Give Me Five for Kids charity had seen almost $3 million raised for the children’s ward of Royal Hobart Hospital.

There has been speculation the two high-profile departures might be linked, with Noonan’s show winding up just one week before Carlton’s show was originally scheduled to finish.

The Mercury understands Ms Bradley travelled from Hobart to Launceston on Monday afternoon.

When asked if there was any basis to rumours Carlton might be replacing Noonan at Triple M in Hobart, Ms Bradley told the Mercury the company was “just focusing on Dave” and would announce Triple M Hobart’s new breakfast show “in due course”.

Before being taken off air early during his morning broadcast on Monday, Carlton hit out at his program’s “management”, Tasmanian Broadcasters, over the poor handling of news of his upcoming resignation and welfare.

Carlton’s final broadcast was supposed to be on October 25, but after he disappeared from the airwaves on Monday, it was announced he would not be returning.
