IT has begun. Tasmania’s great annual migration is underway this morning.
Thousands of excited music lovers, Falls veterans and first-timers are on the road this morning to Falls Festival Marion Bay 2019/20.
More than 11,000 people – about the same as last year – are expected to attend the 17th edition of the three-day festival that runs over New Year’s.
Revellers have been lured in by big names on the bill such as American alternative-pop singer and songwriter Halsey, British electronic duo Disclosure and American indie-rock band Vampire Weekend.
Freya Evans from South Hobart had attended the festival as a punter six or seven times, before taking on a volunteer role last year.
This year she was recruited for the coveted position of intern on the festival team.
“I love the festival,” she said.
“I love the atmosphere and the excitement of having all these people in one place celebrating one thing. It’s contagious.
“I volunteered last year in wrist banding. It was good to see the other side of things.”

“It’s kind of all the lead up, all of the odd jobs that you don’t think about that have to happen to make the festival run. So it’s really cool behind the scenes.”
Festival director Elise Huntley urged patrons to stay hydrated, be sun safe and look after each other with temperatures set to reach the low 30s in the bay on Monday.

Temporary shade structures and misting tents have been set up to help patrons cope with the heat.
“It’s going to be another bumper edition,” she said.
“There’s some great new spaces that we’re introducing this year.”
