Adele’s ‘unreliable’ touring reputation: ‘I couldn’t even get insurance’

JUST days before she cancelled her final two concerts, Adele admitted she’s so “terrible at touring” she couldn’t even secure insurance.

Adele wows fans in Melbourne

SINGING superstar Adele gave a prescient speech about her own “unreliability” as a touring artist just days before she was forced to cancel the final two shows of her mammoth world tour.

Speaking to an audience of close to 100,000 people on the first of her Wembley Stadium shows last week, Adele admitted she was “terrible at touring”.

“This is my 120th show in 15 months. For someone that was terrible at touring, that was unreliable at touring ... I couldn’t even get insurance when I first wanted to do the tour,” she revealed.

.

While the 25 tour has been a success, Adele was dogged by recurring health and vocal problems during her previous world tour in 2011. As dates were rescheduled, postponed and eventually cancelled, Adele ended up performing just 51 shows.

“I’d get pregnant, or my voice would go, or I’d fall in love with someone that liked to belittle my career,” she said of her patchy touring track record.

The 29-year-old said she was determined to make her 25 tour a success — claiming she even went uninsured for the first leg as she proved herself once more.

“I got through my UK and Europe tour, and I finally got insured. I only missed one show, and I swear to god I actually had the flu. I even put a video up to prove to everyone just how rough in fact I was.”

She did indeed — Adele bowed out of her second night in Phoenix, Arizona, in August last year, posting a video apology of proof of her illness:

“For someone who could never really get past 40 shows without having a breakdown, I’ve now done my 120th after this song,” the star continued.

She would make it to her 121st, performing her second Wembley Stadium show last week — then cancelling the final two Wembley dates due to ill health.

It’s a decision that will cost her dearly — and not just from refunding tickets for the 200,000-odd concertgoers who had paid to see her in those cancelled shows. Adele had also planned to film one of the shows for a DVD release, which would’ve assured her a healthy income stream for years to come.

And while the Rumour Has It singer conceded she may never tour again, she assured fans she had no intention of quitting the music industry entirely.

“I am going on a break, and I am going to be a mum for a bit. But I will always write music, and I will always put it out. I might never see you again in a live show; who knows. But I will remember this for the rest of my life,” she said.
