Australian actor David Wenham is set to reprise one of his most beloved roles in the long-awaited sequel to a critically-acclaimed film.

News.com.au has the exclusive first-look trailer for upcoming feature Spit, which comes almost 20 years after 2003’s Gettin’ Square hit cinemas with Avatar star Sam Worthington in the lead role (you can watch the full trailer above).

Wenham, now 59, will return for the follow-up as his iconic character Johnny ‘Spit’ Spitieri, who in the first film was a heroin addict and small-time criminal.

While Gettin’ Square was a box-office flop at the time, grossing $2.1 million domestically against a $7.9 million budget, the movie received widespread praise among critics, with Wenham’s performance as Spit stealing the spotlight.

Picking up 20 years after where it left off, Johnny has been on the run overseas for decades. Upon returning home to Australia on a false passport, he finds himself locked up in an Immigration Detention Centre with a target on his back as old enemies hunt him down.

“As he struggles to stay one step ahead, the resourceful Spit finds new friends in detention, teaching them his version of mateship, and what it means to be truly Australian,” an official synopsis from Transmission Films reads.

The film, which was shot on the Gold Coast earlier this year, is written by local writer and lawyer Christopher Nyst, who also penned Gettin’ Square, and was directed by Jonathan Teplitzky.

It was co-produced by Wenham, Trish Lake, Greg Duffy and Felicity McVay.

Spit will hit cinemas March 6.
