Met Gala red carpet: Australians Nicole Kidman, Chris Hemsworth, Kylie Minogue stun fans

Australians have taken the 2024 Met Gala by storm.
In what is likely to be the biggest contingent of Aussies to attend the high end fashion event, Australians from film, music and fashion have turned out the looks alongside the biggest names in Hollywood.
Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue, Troye Sivan, Hugh Jackman, Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin hit the carpet at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art for the extravaganza that attracts global attention due to the fabulous fashion, its exclusivity and calibre of stars.
One star who also turned heads was basketballer Ben Simmons who also copped a roasting for bringing a bag to the event with a clock on it.
Social media latched onto the briefcase, with many saying Simmons for missing too much time over the past few seasons on the court in his professional career.
The star has a nerve impingement in his lower back. Simmons opted for a standout Thom Browne fit for the event.
“Wearing a clock when you ain’t clock no in game minutes this season is insane,” an X (formerly Twitter) user wrote.
“Time heals all back problems,” another posted on X.
Kidman and chart topping muso hubby Keith Urban complemented each other in black and white. Her new relationship with Balenciaga has so far been fruitful on the red carpet. This latest glamorous gown is nothing short of spectacular, with a simple monochromatic palette, made interesting through the use of ruffled feathering. It was based off a 1950s dress from the House’s archives, which has been reinvented by current creative director Demna.
“I am so looking forward to just having fun with friends, I already saw so many people that I know and just celebrating fashion and art and supporting the museum and supporting the beautiful designers that give and their creations and keeping those dreams alive,” Kidman said, adding: “I look forward to the music as well, so does my husband as well.”
Chris Hemsworth, who was in Sydney for the world premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga last week, attended with actor wife Elsa Pataky.
“Australians have taken Hollywood by storm in the last year, so it’s no surprise that there are lots of Aussies on the red carpet,” Vogue Australia’s Francesca Wallace said.
"Chris Hemsworth was given the ultimate honour as a co-chair, which means he’s one of the hosts, which is really an exciting honour for an Australian. Troye Sivan’s mega last 12 months means he was guaranteed a ticket, and in Prada he is once again giving us one of the best looks.”
Hemsworth is one of four co-hosts of the night alongside Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez and Bad Bunny, all hand picked by Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
The colourful carpet was a long way from Hemsworth’s life in Byron Bay, NSW.
“This is quite the honour,” Hemsworth said. “To be honest I had to ask my wife about the … what the logistics and what happens at this event. I’ve never been and Elsa had never been but she knows much more about the fashion world so being from Australia and a little coastal town, this is all very new to me.”
KPop band Stray Kids were a big hit on the carpet with two members of the band being Australian, specifically having grown up in Sydney. They are Felix (Felix Lee) and Bang Chan (Bang Christopher Chan).
Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin complimented each other with green outfits, both Prada. Luhrmann is one of the creative visionaries who works with Wintour on the Met each year, so his vision is always complimented in his outfit.
This year’s Met Gala theme celebrates the Costume Institute’s new exhibition: Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.
Despite a fairytale-like name that conjures visions of Disney princesses, the 2024 event instead honours clothes that are considered so fragile they can never been worn again and are therefore “sleeping beauties”.
Vogue said the Garden of Time dress code pays homage to a 1962 short story by author J.G. Ballard.
Sivan said he is “not yet” a veteran of the Met Gala.
“This is my third,” he said, wearing Prada.
Sivan is currently touring the United States and said shows were nearly sold out while joking that he is “sweating” his way across the country.
Hemsworth and Pataky meanwhile wore Tom Ford – the Thor star in a sand-colour three-piece suit boldly worn without a tie and the mother of three in a golden knit gown with a floral headpiece.
“I am excited to be here, very honoured to be here, I’m very thankful, very grateful and thankful that I have a beautiful date here with me too,” Hemsworth said.
Elizabeth Debicki modelled some of the exhibition looks in the May issue of Vogue US and opted for custom Dior for the event.
Actor Naomi Watts was also there at the star-studded event.
Watts accessorised her Burberry gown with a puffer-style shawl and white gloves.
One of Australia’s biggest billionaires Anthony Pratt also appeared at the Met Gala.
On The Australian’s top 250 Rich List, Pratt and his family have a combined wealth of $27.66 billion.
His outfit had a quirky detail on his jacket that said “100% Pratt recycled”.
Pratt opened his biggest ever paper mill in America worth $1.09 billion in Kentucky. Pratt is close to former US president Donald Trump. His company Pratt Industries has manufacturing facilities in 25 states in the US. In Australia, he shares the family business Visy with sisters Heloise Pratt and Fiona Geminder.
