Hollywood’s biggest names have stunned fans as they stepped out in their wild and racy gowns and suits for this year’s Met Gala on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
A VIP list of Australian stars also invaded the carpet for the first time in a massive turnout of names including Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman. Kylie Minogue, Troye Sivan, Naomi Watts, Ben Simmons, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban and more.
Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney has made her third appearance at the annual Met Gala, this time with an entirely new look.
In 2023, the 26-year-old actress opted to walk the famed red carpet wearing a blush pink Miu Miu gown boasting an array of shimmering gemstones.
This year, she made star turns in a look that adhered to the event’s theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”.

Emily Ratajkowski just proved that the sheer dress trend isn’t going anywhere just yet as she stepped out in a fully sheer, open-back gown made completely from intricate beads.

It is indeed JLo’s 14th Met Gala event with her butterfly inspired outfit taking around 800 hours to create.
“I think I retire tonight, I think that is it for me,” she joked. “It is lovely, it is a beautiful night, so many artists come together from different genres, from film, from fashion, you have businessmen here, private equity, there’s all different kinds of people here tonight. And so it is not that often you get that mix of all different kinds of society so it is really nice.”
Chris Hemsworth has made his Met Gala mark in subdued yet classic style.
The Aussie A-lister has taken take centre stage at the iconic 2024 show after being hand-picked to co-host the iconic fashion event by legendary Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
Chris Hemsworth, co-chair of the Met Gala for 2024, and wife Elsa Pataky both arrived glowing in Tom Ford. It is their first Met Gala.
“This is quite the honour,” Hemsworth said. “To be honest I had to ask my wife about the … what the logistics and what happens at this event. I’ve never been and Elsa had never been but she knows much more about the fashion world so being from Australia and a little coastal town, this is all very new to me.”
Hemsworth opted for a sand-colour three-piece suit, worn roguishly sans-bow tie. While Pataky wore a golden knit gown, also by Tom Ford, with a floral headpiece as a nod to the theme.
This year’s theme celebrates the Costume Institute’s new exhibition: Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.
“I am excited to be here, very honoured to be here, I’m very thankful, very grateful and thankful that I have a beautiful date here with me too,” Hemsworth said, adding of the craziness of the red carpet: “It is quite a scene coming up those stairs. Logistical questions is what I had, the practicality of it all. They are a wonderful group of people and it is great enthusiasm. It is quite different coming to this event. Obviously we go to the Academy Awards and the film and television awards but coming to a space where there is a mixture of eclectic artists is really interesting and a new crowd for us, a lot of people we know and a lot of people we look up to so we are super excited.”
Despite a fairytale-like name that conjures visions of Disney princesses, the 2024 event instead honours clothes that are considered so fragile they can never been worn again and are therefore “sleeping beauties”.
Vogue said the Garden of Time dress code pays homage to a 1962 short story by author J.G. Ballard.
Anna Wintour is always the first to arrive and kicks off the red carpet in style. This year, her floral-adorned coat with brocade cream gown underneath perfectly fits the theme.
“It is a huge amount of time on so many people’s part,” Wintour said on carpet. “We start planning it over a year in advance, we are already on to 25 and 26 so god is in the details.”
Australians have taken the Met Gala by storm.
Nicole Kidman’s new relationship with Balenciaga has so far been fruitful on the red carpet. This latest glamorous gown is nothing short of spectacular, with a simple monochromatic palette, made interesting through the use of ruffled feathering.
It was based off a 1950s dress from the House’s archives, which has been reinvented by current creative director Demna.
Troye Sivan said he is “not yet” a veteran of the Met Gala.
“This is my third,” he said, wearing Prada.
Sivan is currently touring the United States and said shows were nearly sold out while joking that he is “sweating” his way across the country.
K-Pop band Stray Kids were a big hit on the carpet with two members of the band being Australian, specifically having grown up in Sydney. They are Felix (Felix Lee) and Bang Chan (Bang Christopher Chan).
It was singer Sam Smith’s first Met Gala, attending with designer boyfriend Christian Cowan.
Gigi Hadid donned a voluminous Thom Browne off-the-shoulder white gown with bold black piping trim paired with decorative yellow roses and green stem and leaf designs.
“I am literally wearing a sculpture,” Hadid said, detailing that 2.8 million beads were used on the dress alone. “It took 20 people 5000 hours to work on this look. Seventy people worked on it so I am just so honoured to be here presenting this for them. That is what this is all about, being able to celebrate creativity together, come raise money for the Costume Institute and we just had so much fun with the theme.”

Their outfits, made by Cowan, were inspired by Oscar Wilde 1940s, accentuated by a rose gold detail.
“We are both queer and British so an English rose I thought was perfect and early on in our days I gave Sam a metal-plated rose so this is a nod to that moment,” Cowan explained.
Asked what they would like to see as the future of fashion, Smith said: “clothes in my size in stores”.
“And just to be able to go into shops anywhere and be able to where the girls clothes.”
Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin always look spectacular and Baz is one of the creative visionaries who works with Anna Wintour on the Met, so his vision is always complimented in his outfit.
Matt and Luciana Damon have played it safe with their outfits. Matt in a classic tux, and Luciana in column style Christian Dior white gown.
