Roots music legend Dave Steel, a former member of Australian folk-rock group Weddings Parties Anything, will headline the Kunanyi Folk Club’s second gathering tonight. Steel and his partner, singer/songwriter Tiffany Eckhardt, live in the Huon Valley. The new folk club meets on the first Saturday of each month. BIG SING BONFIRE

Salamanca Place, from 5pm

Don your puffer jacket and head to Salamanca to sing by the fire with thousands of others as part of this free community Festival of Voices centrepiece. Performers in the 90-minute singalong include Dami Im, Henry Wagons, Scott and Nicole Farrow, Uncle Gus and the Rimshots as well as local and visiting choirs. HOBART TWILIGHT MARKET

Long Beach, Sandy Bay, 11am-4pm

Sandy Bay’s popular Friday night market is operating during daylight hours on Sundays during the cooler months. So pack a picnic rug and settle in for an afternoon of local food, drinks, live music and design stalls at this family-friendly and dog-friendly event which is held on the first Sunday of the month until September 1. AFL: NORTH MELBOURNE v ST KILDA

Blundstone Arena, 3.20pm

Rug up and enjoy some AFL action at Bellerive where home-crowd favourites the Kangaroos take on the Saints. Consider booking a return trip on the free footy ferry between Wrest Point and Bellerive Wharf to avoid traffic. General admission tickets from $30 adults, $20 concession, children under 15 are free. HUON VALLEY MID-WINTER FESTIVAL

Ranelagh Recreation Ground, July 12-14

Celebrate the depths of Tasmania’s winter at this pagan-inspired festival featuring food, live music, cider, storytelling and wassailing. The three-day event kicks off on Friday from 5pm, with plenty of music and the burning of a 15-metre-tall “Big Willie” sculpture. Saturday’s bonfire, Storytelling Cup and wassail runs from 2pm-11pm, while Sunday from 10.30am-4.30pm is family fun day. The new venue is at 49 Marguerite Street, Ranelagh.
