THOUSANDS have watched their fears go up in smoke with the ritual burning of a giant swift parrot to cap off this year’s Dark Mofo.
This year’s Ogoh-Ogoh featured a 10m high wooden flame tree adorned with a kilometre of firecrackers and more than 150,000 individual firecracker units.
With a soundtrack of thundering drums and a brass marching band the parrot was hoisted by crane into a nest in the tree.
The parrot remained intact while the tree went up in a spectacular and loud pyrotechnic display.

The parrot then burst into flames, eventually taking the tree with it.
In a carnival atmosphere once unimaginable in Hobart on a winter’s night, children with their own hand-decorated parrots led the procession from the Winter Feast to the burning site at Macquarie Point.

The Ogoh-Ogoh, a demon-like sculpture derived from the Balinese Hindu tradition, takes the form of endangered endemic creatures each year.
Dark Mofo patrons committed their fears to paper and stored them in the bird.
Tonight they watched those fears take to the night sky in a column of sparks and ash.
