DARK Mofo ticket sales have opened with a bang, forcing thousands of ticket hopefuls to wait in a queue.
Admission sales to the seventh annual Dark Mofo festival opened at midday today, with thousands queuing up online to snatch a ticket to the event which pulls in about $50m to the state’s economy each year.
Five Dark Mofo events have already sold out, just over two hours after sales went online.
An ambient sound experience, getting a tattoo and a lecture on the dead have so far been the most popular of this year’s line up along with the annual party that takes place every year.
Liminal Sounbath, Tatts at Tatts with Lauren Winzer and Roger Byard: Lessons from the Mortuary sold within an hour and ten minutes, while two dates of Night Mass, June 15 and June 22 sold out within two and a half hours.
Punters have been told they can sign up for the waitlist online.
One hopeful buyer took to social media expressing concern about the purchase process.
“How is it possible to be in the queue right on 12 noon and be #6112 [in the line],” Katinka Dineen wrote.

As of 1pm Tuesday there were 8200 people queued to buy a ticket to the three-week festival, beginning June 6.
Dark Mofo creative director Leigh Carmichael said organisers were working hard to address ticketing questions as they piled in.
“We really appreciate people’s patience as we do our best to attend to each query,” he said.
“We’ve had a few events sell out already, including the tattoos at Dark + Dangerous Thoughts, but there are a lot of events across the three weeks of Dark Mofo to explore, and a bunch of free programming too.”
He said Monday’s release of pre-sale tickets more than doubled more than doubled last year’s presale record, with 23,415 ticket sold between 6pm and midnight.
“Dark Mofo’s popularity is exceeding our expectations again. The enthusiastic support of our audiences means that we can take risks in programming diverse artists and events - it’s really encouraging,” Mr Carmichael said.
About 80,000 festival tickets were sold in total last year, which saw close to 22,000 out-of-state patrons visit Hobart for paid and free Dark Mofo events.
