WHEN Logan Howell graduates from his science degree at the University of Tasmania this week, he will do so with the closest thing to a perfect score.
Mr Howell has achieved high distinctions in each of the 24 units he studied across his three-year Bachelor of Science, specialising in applied mathematics.
Amid the challenges caused by COVID-19, the 21-year-old said a passion for the field was the main reason for his success.
“It’s not something I set out to do from the start — it was more of a product of enjoying the study I do at university,” he said.
“I think having a passion for something makes it feel as if it’s not really studying.
“There are times where it gets challenging and frustrating but it’s not really a chore, it’s something I enjoy and I dedicate the time to it.”
Mr Howell said discipline and short-term goal-setting when studying were the keys to prevent becoming overwhelmed.
Mr Howell, who has been working at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation for more than a year, has a well-defined career pathway in mind.
“I think working within an industrial mathematics or commercial analytics role and applying my skill set to solve challenges and interesting problems,” he said.
Mr Howell, who grew up in Devonport and attended Don College, said he would return to UTAS next year to study Honours.
