PUBLIC schools have dominated the list of top Tasmanian primary school performers for NAPLAN testing while independent schools were top of the class for secondary schools, new analysis reveals.
The full results from 2019 testing were released on Wednesday to the Federal Government-run MySchool website.
The Mercury has analysed the results of all schools, except special schools, that reported results in all NAPLAN subjects.
The average result was found by taking the school’s mean score across all subjects for the relevant year levels.
Data showed South Hobart Primary School was the top performing primary school in the state, with an average score across the board of 511.8.
John Calvin School in Launceston topped the list for secondary schools with an average score of 607.5.

South Hobart Primary principal Anne Reeves said the school’s result did not come as a surprise.
“We have very high achieving students and excellent learning programs, as well as very supportive families,” Mrs Reeves said.
“The children are enthusiastic and motivated towards their learning.
“This result recognises the hard work of the teachers and students and reflects how all our staff work together to support student learning all the time.”
Mrs Reeves said the school did not “teach to the test”, but instead focused on quality teaching and learning all year-round.
Other top performing state primary schools were Mount Nelson, Albuera St, Mount Stuart, Taroona and Princes Street primary schools.

NAPLAN 2019: SEARCH AND COMPARE EVERY TASMANIAN HIGH SCHOOL
John Calvin School principal Daniel Coote said the students’ success could be attributed to a consistent approach to student support, a more focused approach to using previous NAPLAN data, and asking questions of teaching staff on what was best teaching practice.
“We’re a small school with a deeply committed community supporting us, so we believe we should be obtaining these good results, but what we’re really focusing on is more what NAPLAN calls ‘gains’ by individual students,” he said.
Following a review of NAPLAN, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority cut the amount of information now available on the My School website.
Parents can no longer see how their child’s school compared with similar campuses, or the band that students’ results sat within.
Instead, students’ results are shown with progress tables and comparisons to pupils with similar backgrounds, rather than in contrast to other schools.
