Well-known Australian clothing chain General Pants Co has been hit with legal action over unpaid debts reportedly owed to a retail distributor.

Company UCC Australia, which provides major Australian retailers with a large variety of everyday products, launched a winding up order against the iconic retailer this month, claiming it was owed just under $70,000.

Winding up notices are usually issued by creditors of a company in order to enforce the payment of a debt.

If the debt is found legitimate and a company is unable to pay, the business is usually placed into liquidation by the court.

The matter was set to be heard in the Supreme Court of Victoria next month, but it may no longer be necessary.

A spokesperson for Alquemie Group – the parent company of General Pants Co – told News Corp it was a “commercial matter between both parties that has now been fully resolved”.

UCC Australia chief executive Peter Kemsley claimed the company was owed a total of $69,835 from the retailer, documents lodged with the court reveal.

The company claimed the debt arose from “unpaid invoices for the supply of cameras and film” between October and December last year.

“The goods were delivered and accepted by (General Pants Co), and the invoiced amounts remain due and payable,” the document read.

The fashion brand, which has been around for over five decades and over 50 stores across Australia and New Zealand, was previously slapped with court action to liquidate it over a debt to a delivery company.

The other application to wind up General Pants Co was made by Mainfreight Air & Ocean in June last year.

A statement from Alquemie Group at the time said the application “ha(d) been fully resolved”.

It comes as a string of beloved Australian fashion brands have unravelled in recent times, with post-Covid tax debt and cost of living pressures stretching them to breaking point.

Latest chains to have collapsed include popular footwear brand Wittner, Australian fashion brand Jeanswest and women’s activewear brand Exoticathletica.

Retail giant Mosaic Brands – which take in brands Millers, Rivers, Crossroads, Katies, Noni B and Autograph – also entered voluntary administration in October last year, owing creditors about $318m.
