HOBART is the third most popular destination for Australians booking half price flights under the Federal Government’s tourism scheme.

Queensland’s Gold Coast was the most sought-after location for the flights, while Adelaide took out the second spot.

But more than 80,200 half price flights have been booked to Hobart so far as part of the program, and another 41,923 tickets have been booked to Launceston.

A further 4077 tickets were booked to Devonport and Burnie.

The flights have been a strong boost for tourism businesses, Tourism Industry Council Tasmania chief executive Luke Martin said.

“People are walking around the city, around the waterfront, the restaurants and the hotels are all really busy, which is really exciting,” he said.

Mr Martin said the sector would still need support after the cheap flights ended on July 31 given international borders were still closed.

Federal Tourism Minister Dan Tehan said the half price flights scheme had been a “life-saver” for the aviation and tourism industries.

“More than 82 per cent of our half-priced tickets have been sold in just one month and we know demand remains strong,” he said.

“We continue to encourage Australians to take advantage of this opportunity to book a cheap holiday, because for every dollar spent on a flight, 10 more will be spent on the ground.”
