Suncorp Stadium GM Alan Graham retiring in July after 800-event reign

He’s steered more than 800 of Queensland’s biggest events including 220 Broncos games and 27 State of Origins. Now Suncorp Stadium’s boss is exiting after more than 20 years.

The man who steered more than 800 major events at Suncorp Stadium – many that are etched in Queenslanders’ collective memories – will leave the job in July.

Suncorp Stadium general manager Alan Graham will leave the job having been at the helm for 21 of the past 23 years in a period where events at the stadium generated multi-billion dollar windfall for Brisbane.

Legends ASM Global APAC chairman and chief executive Harvey Lister paid tribute to Graham whose reign at Suncorp was only broken by a two-year break from 2007-2009 when he managed the Indoor Basketball Arena for the Beijing Olympic Games.

“He is one of a kind and his departure will be felt across the industry,” Lister says.

“We’re finalising arrangements for a very capable successor who will carry on Alan’s great work at the stadium and will be in a position to make that announcement in the next two weeks.”

It is one of the busiest Stadiums in the world hosting around 60 events a year.

Graham says it was a privilege to be the steward of such an iconic part of Queensland.

“Suncorp Stadium is synonymous with Queensland and to be able to shape its story is something that has meant a great deal to me,” he says.

Some of the big events the stadium has hosted include EPL matches, boxing events – the Manny Pacquiao/ Jeff Horn title fight in 2017 – and the NRL Magic Round.

Since 2006 the venue has hosted Robbie Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, U2, Bon Jovi, Sir Elton John, Ed Sheeran, Eminem, Coldplay, Phil Collins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink, Luke Combs, Foo Fighters, One Direction, Justin Bieber, Queen, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Travis Scott and Andre Rieu.

Graham also co-founded the Former Origin Greats where he remains on the board as a director.

Property play

Property giant CBRE is set to acquire Burgess Rawson whose national portfolio auction campaigns have made it a market leader in Australia’s private and high-net-worth commercial property investor market.

The acquisition will strengthen CBRE’s Metropolitan Investments business, which focuses on commercial property assets and development sites valued at up to $35m.

It will include Burgess Rawson in Queensland whose head office is at 260 Queen St and which currently has Adam Thomas at the helm as partner and managing director and Andrew Havig and NevilleSmith are partners.

Sources believe the dozen or so staff will “all come across” although what their roles will be will have to be worked out.

Overall Burgess Rawson employs more than 80 professionals and the firm manages

transactions in a broad range of sectors, including early education, convenience retail, fast food, healthcare, large-format retail and service stations.

The imminent CBRE purchase of the company does not incude Burgess Rawson operations in WA and ACT, which are independently owned.

The CBRE Metropolitan Investments team will be led by Burgess Rawson chief executive Ingrid Filmer.

Filmer says Burgess Rawson has spent five decades building deep trust with private investors and establishing a market-leading national platform.

“Joining CBRE—one of the most respected global real estate firms—gives us the scale, capability, and reach to elevate what we do best,” she says.

“This partnership allows us to connect our clients to international capital, world-class research, and broader market opportunities than ever before.”

The transaction is expected to be completed next month.
