PLANS for a new private hospital with six operating theatres and a 24-bed overnight ward in an inner city Hobart suburb have been revealed.

The proposed $50 million Tasman Private Hospital would be built at the old WIN TV site at 48-52 New Town Rd, New Town.

As well as operating theatres and an overnight ward, the four-storey medical centre would include a pharmacy, radiology, conference facilities, doctors’ rooms and health support services.

A development application for the hospital has been advertised publicly by Hobart City Council from Wednesday.

The project is a joint-venture between national short-stay hospital specialist Nexus Hospitals and Contact Group, which is a Tasmanian-based family construction business that employs more than 180 people.

Undercover carparking would be provided in the basement and on the ground floor, which would also house a cafe and the primary public entrance.

The first level would accommodate medical related tenancies to support hospital patients and outpatients, with the second level featuring the private hospital with surgery theatres, wards, nurse stations, rehabilitation areas, pre-operation bays and a courtyard.

“Nexus has served the Hobart community for the past 25 years with services in ophthalmology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, facio-maxillary surgery, ENT and dental surgery,” he said.

“In a model Nexus is replicating in its 14 facilities in other states, Tasman Private will allow co-location and co-ordination of related health services in a world-class facility, providing Tasmanians with access to a high standard of healthcare.”

The new hospital is expected to employ more than 130 staff, with construction to be by the end of 2021.
