A SITE that was home to an indoor sports centre for more than 20 years is set to become an outlet for liquor giant Dan Murphy’s.

Developers have lodged plans with Clarence City Council to transform the building at 10 Percy St, Bellerive, into a bottle shop that would be open seven days a week from 8am-10pm.

It comes after the Mercury revealed in August last year that Dan Murphy’s was considering the site.

Council has advertised the proposal for a partial change of use to bottle shop and additions, lodged by Macquarie Builders.

In the plans, E3 Planning on behalf of Macquarie Builders said the proposal was for a portion of the existing building to be changed to a bottle shop.

The cost of the development was estimated at between $2 million and $2.5 million.

The bottle shop would take up about 1400 square metres of the 2090 square metres the building occupies but the report did not specify plans for the remaining space.

If the development passes council and proceeds, the store will be the retailer’s third in Tasmania, with existing outlets in New Town and Launceston.

“The proposal would stimulate the Bellerive Shopping Village by bringing in a large retail brand which in turn would bring with it an increase in shoppers to the area,’’ the report said.

The report suggested the proposal would also improve the appearance of the existing building facade facing Percy St.

It said correspondence has been sent to all immediate adjoining landowners in October last year outlining the proposal and inviting comment.

Two responses were received, with concerns raised from nearby residents about noise and safety of pedestrians if there was increased traffic in the area.

A traffic assessment accompanied the report, and the plans are being advertised publicly until March 23.

Action Indoor Sports had been a hub for social sporting rosters for more than two decades, with indoor cricket, soccer, netball, and dodge ball among the centre’s offerings for children and adults.

The venue had also operated as Inflatable World on weekends and school holidays in recent years, with hundreds of children flocking to the venue for playtime and birthday parties.

The centre closed in March last year due to COVID-19 restrictions and announced online in July that it would not reopen.

The Bellerive centre was part of a national chain of sports stadiums run by Action Indoor Sports.
