LIQUOR giant Dan Murphy’s is considering the site of a former indoor sports centre on Hobart’s Eastern Shore for a new outlet.

The location at 10 Percy St, Bellerive, has been home to the Action Indoor Sports Centre for more than 20 years.

But last month it was revealed the centre would be closing for good, having initially shut in March due to coronavirus restrictions.

A spokeswoman for Dan Murphy’s confirmed the retailer was looking into the site.

“Dan Murphy’s is always looking for new potential sites across the country where we can bring our unique concept to life,’’ she said.

“However, we are yet to commit to the Percy Street site in Bellerive.”

Dan Murphy’s has two stores in Tasmania, at New Town and in Launceston.

It is understood the Percy St site is owned by Melbourne-based developers Key Capital, who have listed on its website a development in Bellerive as one of its current projects.

Another of the group’s projects is a Dan Murphy’s store in the northern Victorian city of Wangaratta.

Key Capital has been contacted for comment.

A Clarence City Council spokesman said it had not made any decision on interest or plans for the site and had no knowledge of private interest.

Action Indoor Sports had been a hub for social sporting rosters for more than two decades, with indoor cricket, soccer, netball, and dodge ball among the centre’s offerings for children and adults.

The venue had also operated as Inflatable World on weekends and school holidays in recent years, with hundreds of children flocking to the venue each day for playtime and birthday parties.

The centre closed on March 17 due to COVID-19 restrictions and announced online early last month that it would not reopen.

The Bellerive centre was part of a national chain of sports stadiums run by Action Indoor Sports.
