A MACCAS drive-thru and Coles supermarket are set to be among the first tenants of a new Eastern Shore shopping centre.

Construction on the new $30 million Glebe Hill Village is set to begin in early 2021 with 80 per cent of the retail centre now full.

It will be the first new neighbourhood shopping centre in metropolitan Hobart in more than 10 years.

Project developers Sydney-based Tipalea Partners said eight leases had been negotiated during the COVID lockdown.

CEO Scott Spanton said the demand they had received from retailers is testimony to how vital the new centre is for the community.

“More than ever, the jobs created by this investment are desperately needed. Despite all the doom and gloom this year, these forward-thinking retailers release we are still 18 months away from opening and that we will eventually come out of this pandemic,” he said.

Mr Spanton said the shopping centre was essential infrastructure for Hobart’s fastest growing catchment, set to create about 200 construction jobs and more than 350 jobs when the centre opens.

“McDonald’s alone is expected to employ around 100 people across a mix of full time, part time and casual roles, with training and development a focus for these new employees,” he said.

Other tenants for the new centre include a chemist and medical centre, a bottleshop, a tobacconist and a nail salon. Australia Post will also set up shop in the complex.

Mr Spanton said for the remaining tenancies they were targeting quality food and beverage, cafes, sushi, butchers, hairdressers, dentists, optometrists and hearing care.

Construction on the centre is set to commence early next year, with opening expected in mid-2022.
