A PROPOSED shopping centre for the Eastern Shore looks set to soon become a reality, with a major supermarket tenant signing on to the development, the developer says.
Work on the Glebe Hill Village shopping centre near Howrah was originally due to start in 2017, but at the time, supermarket giant Coles said it did not have plans to open any new stores in the state.

The shopping centre proposal, which Clarence City Council approved in 2016, includes a supermarket, shops and cafes, a bottle shop, bank and mall area.
Chief executive officer of Sydney-based developers Tipalea Partners, Scott Spanton, told the Mercury Coles had been locked in for the Eastern Shore site.
Mr Spanton said Woolworths had also expressed interest in the site, but Coles’ offer was more competitive.
He said the company planned to begin construction this time next year, with an aim to have the development open by mid-2022.
“It’s a great vote of confidence for the area,” Mr Spanton said.
“We had about half a dozen other tenants signed on back in 2016 and we are yet to reconfirm those, but we will begin a leasing campaign within the next four weeks.”
Mr Spanton said the project would create 250 jobs during construction and 200 ongoing.
A spokesman for Coles, which has 16 supermarkets in Tasmania, said the company was always looking at ways to expand its offering to Hobart residents.
“We are working with the developer and hope to bring a new supermarket to the area, subject to relevant approvals,” the spokesman said.
