Hobart's Hope and Anchor leasehold up for sale

A chance to run a Hobart tavern that lays claim to being Australia’s oldest continually licensed pub is up for grabs.

AN opportunity awaits to operate an iconic Hobart tavern that lays claim to being Australia’s oldest continually licensed pub.

The leasehold for the Hope and Anchor Tavern – which first opened in 1807 – is up for sale.

The freehold and leasehold for the building at 65 Macquarie St was advertised together as a single package in October last year.

But a broker behind the proposed sale said this had proved to be a challenge.

Link Business Brokers Tasmania director Nawwar Alshawi said the leasehold would be advertised for $450,000.

“With its heritage, and position on the waterfront, it needs to be a focal point,” he said.

“It’s a significant business in terms of tourism.

“It’s a chance for someone to put their stamp on it and continue the tradition of telling people about the history.”

The Hope and Anchor first opened its doors on July 25, 1807, under the name of the Whale Fishery and has also been known as The Hope, the Anchor and Hope, and The Alexandra.

The premises have been continuously licensed since 1807, including during a six-year closure between 2008 and 2014.

BRIGHT FUTURE FOR AUSTRALIA’S OLDEST PUB

The lease is currently held by Daniel Cullen while the freehold is owned by a Singaporean investor.
