The historic Hobart hotel the Hope and Anchor Tavern will reopen next Friday night.

AFTER shutting its doors six years ago, what was Australia’s oldest continually licensed pub is under new license and will reopen in just 10 days.

The historic Hope and Anchor, built in 1807, has been well maintained during its closure allowing for a quick reopening.

The pub will be licensed to Glen Millhouse and managed by Robert Wilson.

“It is too good an opportunity to pass up. It’s a magnificent building and with all the memorabilia is almost like a museum in its own right as well,” said Mr Millhouse.

He plans to keep the pub “traditional” offering meals under $10 but will serve a range of boutique beverages.

Before opening the building will be given a fresh of coat of paint in traditional heritage colours, but otherwise will remain in it’s existing condition.

The building was bought by Chinese developer Kim Xing for $1.5 million late last year.

Another nearby iconic watering hole, Montgomery's Hotel, will also soon reopen its doors.

Tasmanian Hospitality Association general manager Steve Old said the pubs would make the area a new attraction for revellers.

“I’d really like to see this area kick off with other redevelopments in the vicinity – including TMAG,” he said.

“Seeing an iconic pub like the Hope and Anchor reopen its doors is a sign the industry is moving forwards.”

Mr Old said the size of the Hope and Anchor made it a unique venue able to accommodate large functions while keeping the public bar open to all.
