What’s open and when this October long weekend
Several states and territories will observe public holidays this weekend, ushering in abnormally warm temperatures to kick off October — here’s what you need to know.

Aussies across the country are gearing up for a relaxing few days as another long weekend appearoaches.
Commonly referred to as the “October long weekend”, the ACT, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and some parts of Tasmania will all have a public holiday on Monday, October 2.
Victorians are now on the back end of their own long weekend, after enjoying a day off on Friday ahead of the AFL Grand Final.
When every public holiday rolls around, it’s always a bit confusing what stores will be open. To make it a little easier, we’ve checked the trading hours for some of the big retailers so you’re not caught short.
Woolworths
Monday October 2:
- QLD: all stores open
- NSW: all stores open
- ACT: all stores open
- SA: most stores closed
Coles
Monday October 2:
- QLD: all stores open
- NSW: all stores open
- ACT: all stores open
- SA: all stores closed except for Port Lincoln, Berri, Port Augusta, Mount Barker, Adelaide Rundle Place, Whyalla Westlands, Murray Bridge, Mount Gambier and Victor Harbor
Aldi and IGA
Most Aldi stores will operate as usual, although customers are encouraged to check the online store locator for the opening hours of their local store.
As IGA stores are independently-owned, the hours will differ between stores — some stores will be trading as normal while others may have restricted hours. IGA customers can check trading hours with their local IGA or online.

Monday October 2: All stores open from 10am, closing at 6-7pm
Liquorland
Monday October 2:
- QLD: all stores open
- NSW: all stores open
- ACT: all stores open
- SA: all stores closed except for Port Lincoln, Berri, Port Augusta, Mount Barker, Adelaide Rundle Place, Whyalla Westlands, Murray Bridge, Mount Gambier and Victor Harbor
BWS
Monday October 2: all stores open from 10am, closing at 6-7pm
Kmart
Monday October 2:
- QLD: all stores open, opening time from 9-10am and closing 4-6pm
- NSW: all stores open, opening time from 7-10am and closing 4-8pm. 24-hour stores open as usual.
- ACT: all stores open, 8-8pm
- SA: Firle, Tea Tree, Munno Para, Ingle Farm, Kurralta Park, West Lakes, Port Noarlunga, Port Adelaide and Churchill all closed. All other stores open 9-5pm
Target
Monday October 2:
- QLD: All stores open, 9-5pm
- NSW: All stores open, close 1-2 hours early
- ACT: Belconnen and Tuggeranong both open, 9-5pm
- SA: Only Centrepoint open 11-5pm
Big W
Monday October 2:
- QLD: all stores open
- NSW: all stores open
- ACT: all stores open
- SA: all stores closed except for Victor Harbour, Port Augusta, Renmark, Murray Bridge and Mount Gambier
Bunnings
Monday October 2: all stores will open, however public holiday trading hours apply — check the website of your local store for specific trading hours.
Westfield
Monday October 2:
- ACT: Westfield Belconnen and Woden will trade from 10-4pm
- NSW: Westfield Kotara will trade from 10-4pm. Westfield Tuggerah, Eastgardens, Hornsby, Liverpool, Mt Druitt, Penrith and Warringah will trade from 10-5pm. Westfield Bondi Junction, Burwood, Chatswood, Hurstville, Miranda, and Parramatta will trade from 10-6pm. Westfield Sydney and Sydney Central Plaza will trade from 10-7pm
- SA: all stores closed
- QLD: Westfield North Lakes, Garden City, Carindale and Chermside will trade from 10-5pm. Westfield Coomera and Helensvale will trade from 10-4pm
