YOGA enthusiasts can breathe deep and regain their inner calm – because a popular Hobart yoga studio that was placed in the hands of administrators is about to re-open.

Alceme yoga studio has been purchased by a Hobart husband and wife team with a passion for both fitness and finance.

The pair of accountants, Trish May and David Lienert, plan to re-open the business on Monday, May 13.

Ms May said she was a former yoga student at the yoga hall before it closed and went into administration, and desperately wanted the studio to re-open.

“I was devastated when it closed, it’s just such a special space,” she said.

Ms May, who works as an accountant nearby in Hobart’s CBD, said the yoga classes had been her sanctuary three times a week.

“I always felt so at peace in the space, it’s so full of natural light … it almost feels sacred”.

As well as being an accountant, Ms May has been a fitness instructor for 15 years and is a keen runner.

Mr Lienert said he was not a former client of Alceme, but was keen to start yoga.

“The health benefits are huge, especially the breathing and mindfulness.”

Mr Lienert said they would honour any old yoga passes, and hoped to see all the previous 250 regular clients back — as well as many of the previous teachers.

The upmarket wellness centre closed suddenly in March after it was placed into the hands of administrators.

Ms May said she knew there would be ripples of relief around Hobart when the doors re-opened.

“People were so disappointed when it closed, there’s nothing quite like it in Hobart,” she said.

The impeccably styled centre, in Victoria St, is spread over four-storeys. The building is also home to a health-food café, called The Kitchen, but that is run independently of Alceme and has remained open for business.

It took more than a year to restore the historic building, which was originally built for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Building owner Rod West said he spent in excess of $1 million restoring the premises.

Mr West is now looking for a new operator for the wellness spa that was also part of the original Alceme Centre, which is being sold separately to the yoga studio.

The spa, which has six treatment rooms, opened for only two weeks before Alceme closed its doors.

“The spa is completely fitted out, ready to go and is stunning,” Mr West said.

“We’re looking for someone to create an amazing healing sanctuary.”
