Supreme Court heard Jessy John Gillis had big ambitions as dealer

While only 19-years-old, an Oakey man went out of his way to ingratiate himself to the local criminals, including supplying a firearm and warehousing an eye-watering amount of methamphetamine.

WHEN police raided Jessy John Gillis’ home on February 7, he realised how much trouble he was in and immediately co-operated with the authorities.

He told them where they would find more than 32g of pure methamphetamine he had stashed, along with who he was holding it for.

Gillis went one step further in phoning the drug’s rightful owner and asking them to hand themself into police.

The facts of Gillis’ early flirtation with the Oakey crime scene were outlined when he appeared before the Toowoomba Supreme Court yesterday, to plead guilty to a raft of serious offences, including possessing a quantity of methamphetamine over two grams and supplying a rifle.

Crown Prosecutor Shontelle Petrie told the court police had tapped a phone used by Gillis’ supplier, which revealed his offending.

“They heard a number of phone calls where the offender supplied drugs to Gillis,” she said

“There was another communication where Gillis agreed to supply a Category A firearm.

“We know that it was a .22 calibre rifle and it seems Gillis wanted to ingratiate himself and indicated that this would not be an isolated incident.”

Acting for the defence, barrister Jessica Goldie said her client had made an early plea and co-operated with police during the February raid.

“He told them what they would find,” she said.

In sentencing, Justice Thomas Bradley offered a harsh assessment of the criminal world.

“The drug world is not very glamorous and not very exciting,” he said.

“The people who want to climb the drug ladder are much more likely to find themselves locked in a toolbox at the bottom of a lake, or being required to lock someone else in the toolbox, than they are to lead a glamorous life.”

Justice Bradley ordered a head sentence of two and half years in jail with immediate parole.
