Warwick police have arrested a man who they suspect ran the border checkpoint at Wallangarra in a stolen green Mitsubishi Magna sedan.

It is alleged the man crossed into an oncoming traffic lane at the COVID-19 border checkpoint in an effort to bypass police.

He then travelled north along the New England Highway before dumping the vehicle on Junabee Rd, east of Warwick about 12.30pm
“It was semi-crashed and the driver fled on foot,” a Queensland Police Service spokesman said.

The man ran along the Condamine River before his eventual arrest a few hours later.

Police believe he was disturbed while ransacking a home on East St, about 1.15pm.

He will be held in custody overnight, to appear in the Warwick Magistrates Court charged with several offences, including evading police.

The car was reported stolen from Casino.

Officers from the Stanthorpe CIB are following up with New South Wales police regarding the theft.

It is understood the Magna was bearing false or stolen NSW plates.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the motorist was driving erratically, evading police and crossing into the oncoming traffic lane.
