A 30-YEAR-OLD man who continued to drive after his driver’s licence had been suspended for separate drug driving offences has been ordered off the road for more than four years.
Daniel James Brewis had first been pulled over by police on the Bruce Highway near Pamona on May 16 last year, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.
A saliva sample from the 30-year-old had tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient of cannabis.
Police prosecutor Rowan Brewster-Webb told the court Brewis told police he had smoked cannabis the previous day.
Two days later, Brewis had been pulled over by police on Brisbane Road, Booval, and this time tested positive for methamhetamine and cannabis, he said.
Because it was his second drug driving matter, the 30-year-old’s driver’s licence was suspended forthwith.
However, he was caught driving on the Gatton-Helidon Road at Grantham about 2.35pm, December 4, telling police he had sent a written plea of guilty to the court and believed his drug driving offences had been dealt with, Mr Brewster-Webb said.
Three weeks later on December 23, he had again been pulled over while driving on Gatton-Helidon Road at Grantham, again on a suspended licence.
He told police he had no other way to get to work, Mr Brewster-Webb told the court.
The self-represented Brewis pleaded guilty to both drug driving and both driving on a suspended licence offences.
Acting Magistrate Roger Stark explained to him that the driving disqualification periods would be cumulative on each other.
Mr Stark fined Brewis a total $1350 and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for a total four years and three months.
Mr Stark said Brewis would be eligible to apply to the court to have the disqualification periods lifted after he has been off the road for two years.
