A Toowoomba man has been imprisoned following a degrading assault on his ex-partner while she was getting breakfast ready at home.
Tyler Jay Tigges, 27, assaulted his ex-partner of seven years, punching her multiple times, putting a cigarette out on her neck, and following her throughout the house continuing to attack her.
The prolonged attack happened on November 18 2024, and Tigges was under a DV protection order to be on good behaviour, not commit violence towards the victim, and to not enter his ex-partner’s address without written consent.
Magistrate Mark Howden said it is assumed that Tigges was given written consent to enter the premise on that day prior to the assault.
During an argument the victim asked Tigges to leave the house multiple times which he ignored, before he put his cigarette out on the victim’s neck leaving a burn mark.
He then punched the victim multiple times in the back of the head, her lower back, and side of her head which caused her to fall and hit her head on the kitchen cupboard.
Tigges then followed his ex-partner into the bedroom pulling her hair, leading her to fall to the floor.
He told her to clean herself up, before punching her in the back of the head twice while she was standing at the sink in the bathroom.
In the attack Tigges accused his ex-partner of cheating on him and being involved with bikies, the court heard.
The victim reported the DV incident to the Toowoomba Police Station the same day, and Tigges was taken into the Toowoomba Watch House.
Under his bail Tigges was fitted with a monitoring device and one of his bail conditions was to not be within 200m of the victim’s home, a condition he broke twice.
Tigges who has a six page long criminal history was previously imprisoned for three months starting September 21 2021 for contravening a DVO, and was under probation for 18 months starting November 11 2022 for contravening a DVO.
The couple who were previously together for seven years are no longer in a relationship and Tigges has not seen his daughter for the past six months, the court heard.
Mr Howden said the court condemns actions of DV and wanted to send a strong message to Tigges and anybody else who considers violence against others.
“The community has a right to expect that women will be protected from crimes of this kind,” he said.
“This is protracted violence against a woman that you knew and it is a horrific thing to do.
“In a manner that can only be described as degrading, you told her to clean herself up and then you further assaulted her.”
Tigges pleaded guilty to contravening a DV order, two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, two counts of unlawful assault, and two counts of breaching bail conditions.
Given the nature of his offending and Tigges’ past history he was sentenced to nine months imprisonment.
He was given a parole eligibility date of August 13 2025 and his convictions were recorded.
