Rural police in the Darling Downs District will take part in a national audit of gun owners and their firearms.
Police have urged owners to check their weapons are secured in accordance with Weapons Act and Weapons Regulations.
“By ensuring your weapons are locked and secured in accordance with regulations will ensure the safety of the community and assist in preventing firearm-related offences,” Texas Sergeant Greg Finucane said.
“Police are also encouraging license holders to check their expiry date on licence, as it is the responsibility of the licence holder to ensure it does not expire.”
Weapons Licensing does not send out renewal notices, and the current wait on licence processing may see a requirement for licence holders with expired licences to hand their weapons in to a licensed dealer or police station until the license is renewed, which can cause added expense with storage and application fees.
