Australia's growing drug crisis

A Toowoomba man’s “significant” drug problem has landed him in court after he was busted in possession of cannabis and amphetamine.

Father of two Zachery Lewis Suhr appeared via video link in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing a dangerous drug, possession of a knife in a public place and possession of drug utensils.

The court was told police arrested the 30-year-old about 3.30am on February 7 at the Gowrie Road Hotel on unrelated matters.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Alister Windsor said after he was detained a search of a satchel revealed two clip-seal bags, containing 1.77g of cannabis and 0.5g of a crystal substance identified as amphetamine.

Zachery Lewis Suhr, 30, has been sentenced in Toowoomba Magistrates Court to multiple drug offences.

The court was told in the weeks prior on January 24 police intercepted a vehicle on North St to discover Suhr in the passenger seat.

Sergeant Windsor said a search of the vehicle uncovered a bag in the passenger’s side door with a set of electronic scales covered in a crystal residue as well as a knife.

Suhr’s solicitor Ryan McCullough told the court his client grew up between Toowoomba and Yeppoon, and had attended St Mary’s College until year 10, but his childhood was “unstable” and marred by a proximity to drug use.

The court was told Suhr first began using cannabis and the age of 10, and had progressed to methamphetamine by age 12.

Mr McCullough said Suhr had previously worked as a fitter and turner, and had two kids but was separated from their mother.

Complicating Suhr’s matters was the fact that he was on parole and a suspended sentence at the time of the offending, with his “significant” criminal history a reflection of his lengthy history with drugs, magistrate Clare Kelly said.

Suhr was sentenced to three months jail, with immediate parole eligibility after Ms Kelly declared 65 days of pre-sentence custody as time served. The operational period of the suspended sentence was extended by one month.
