Highfields man caught speeding while drunk

A man has been hit with a $1854 fine after he was caught doing 135km/h in a 60km/h zone while drunk behind the wheel.

The 21-year-old Highfields man was detected travelling at more than double the speed limit on Carrington Rd at Torrington, at about 6pm, Tuesday.

A Toowoomba Highway Patrol officer intercepted the driver and conducted a roadside breath test.

Video from the officer’s body-worn camera captures him exchanging some stern words with the driver.

“I can smell alcohol on you,” he said.

The man was detained and taken to the Toowoomba Police Station where a blood test allegedly returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.117 per cent.

He was fined, lost eight demerit points and received an on-the-spot, six-month driver's licence suspension.

Officer in Charge of Highway Patrol Toowoomba Senior Sergeant Kim Hill said there was no excuse for this type of driving behaviour on our roads.

“When someone decides to drive at high speeds while under the influence of alcohol, they not only put their own life at risk but other road users,” she said.

“No family should have to go through the pain of losing a loved one through road trauma because of someone’s poor decision making.

“Mobile patrols like these are about keeping our roads safe for all road users and motorists can expect we will be anywhere at any time.”

The man was also charged with mid-range drink driving and will face the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on July 1.

Speed and drunk driving are the leading causes of fatal and serious traffic crashes in Queensland.

In 2024, 302 people died on Queensland road and of this crashes, 22.8 per cent were the result of speeding, while 29.8 per cent were caused by drivers who were affected by alcohol or drugs.

Almost 120 people have died on our roads since the start of 2025.
