A woman who attacked a man with a coat hanger after he refused her partner a cigarette has been handed suspended jail sentence.

A woman who attacked a man with a coathanger over a cigarette has been handed a suspended jail term.

Kerri Hazel Rah Crow and her then partner John William Vote had approached a hospital worker outside Toowoomba Hospital on March 12, 2019.

When he refused Vote’s request for a cigarette, Crow had approached armed with a coat hanger and struck him on the shoulder.

The victim hit her with the motorcycle helmet he had been carrying, Toowoomba District Court heard.

Vote punched the man who punched back, prompting Crow to again attack him with the coat hanger, prosecutor Ellen Fletcher said.

During an ensuing scuffle between the two men, the victim had kneed Vote in the head and again Crow struck him with the coat hanger, she said.

Members of the public broke up the altercation and the victim was treated at hospital for injuries to his jaw and knee.

Vote, 45, pleaded guilty in the same court last year to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed in company and was sentenced to six months in jail but the whole term was suspended for 12 months.

He was in court when Crow, 48, pleaded guilty to the same charge on Tuesday.

Her barrister David Jones told the court his client suffered mental health issues all of her life and had been homeless at the time of the incident.

However, she was now in accommodation and medicated and a lot calmer, he said.

Judge Deborah Richards sentenced Crow to three months in jail, fully suspended for six months.
