A 26-year-old man has been charged with a litany of offences after the car he was in flipped over and caught fire on a suburban street in Toowoomba on Thursday night.
Residents were woken to sounds what they thought were gunshots and explosions near the corner of Tor and North streets in Rockville just before 11pm.
Emergency services arrived at the scene within minutes to find the vehicle leaking fluid and starting to catch fire, with the flames eventually reaching the height of the nearby power poles.
One local, who declined to be named, said he heard a series of bangs and scrapes before running out to find the wreck of the vehicle in front of his neighbour’s property.
“I had just crawled into bed and heard that — we just heard, ‘bang, crash, scrape’,” he said.
“It came off the corner and must have flipped, and ended up on its roof.
“There were car parts strewn all the way down, the engine was on the footpath – how did this car just fall apart like that?
“They hit like six wheelie bins, two power poles on the way down.”
Fellow Tor St residents Denver Griinke and Kirsty Mason said the car was already on fire when they went out to investigate.
“It sounded like a gunshot — we didn’t want to get out of bed, but then when we heard it the second time we realised one of us had to go,” Ms Mason said.
“It looked like it was rolled on top of another car, and then we were there trying to do the maths of how that happened.
“When we came out it was already on fire, and hoped nobody was in there,” Mr Griinke added.
The couple praised the response time of the Toowoomba fire units, saying they arrived within five minutes of the incident.
Police have charged 26-year-old Zaccarra Gavin Scott with dangerous driving, failing to remain at an incident to render assistance, failing to comply with the duties of a driver involved in a crash, and driving an unregistered vehicle.
His case was mentioned in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday, but no bail application was made due to Mr Scott being on a return to prison warrant.
The matter has been adjourned until March 2.
