A 29-year-old Warwick man charged in relation to what police claim was a violent domestic confrontation on the streets of the Rose City has been refused bail and remanded in custody.
In what was at times a confusing bail application before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Tuesday, January 2, Warren Leslie Jarrett appeared by phone from the Warwick watch house, while his solicitor Charmaine Malam appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court before Magistrate Kay Ryan in the same court while police prosecutor Bridie O’Shea appeared via video link from Ipswich Magistrates Court.
Ms Malam applied for bail, conceding her client was in a “show cause” situation in that he had to show cause why his continued detention was not warranted.
Ms Malam described the relationship between Mr Jarrett and his partner as “toxic” and that police had spoken with him in the hospital after he was allegedly struck to the head with a bottle.
Her client instructed he needed to attend the funeral of his son in Tamworth next week, she said.
However, objecting to bail, Senior Constable O’Shea told the court it was alleged Mr Jarrett had breached the “no contact” court orders by sending the aggrieved woman text messages and by physical violence in that it was alleged the aggrieved had a bite mark to her back.
The 29-year-old was also subject to a suspended sentence and had a criminal history in New South Wales that involved previous acts of violence, she said.
Magistrate Ryan said it appeared the Crown case was strong with a number of statements from members of the public who allegedly witnessed the ongoing incidents on the streets of Warwick.
Ms Ryan said it appeared the relationship was toxic but reminded Mr Jarrett that the court order was against him.
Refusing bail, Ms Ryan remanded Mr Jarrett in custody to appear via video link before the Warwick Magistrates Court on January 22.
