A Toowoomba court heard a woman was forced to flee her home and take refuge at a neighbour’s house after her then partner “snapped out of nowhere” and attacked her.

On October 31, a young man fronted Toowoomba Magistrate Court and pleaded guilty to an aggravated offence of contravening a domestic violence order.

Police prosecutor Jessica Lynch when police were called to a loud disturbance at the pair’s home in May, officers found the woman shaken and distressed at a neighbouring property.

Ms Lynch said the woman had been watching Netflix when the man began yelling at her before he “snapped,” slapping her in the face and pushing her around the home.

She said it was a serious incident and police were worried about what could have occurred if the woman had not been able to escape, noting when officers arrived he was highly intoxicated and would not stop screaming.

Ms Lynch said man in his 20s had a two page criminal history, and one other domestic violence breach which was violent and a lot more serious than his fresh offence.

The court heard the incident occurred on the man’s birthday after he drank to excess, and the soon to be chicken abattoir worker had a long history of mental health struggles.

Toowoomba magistrate Kyna Morice told him the last aggravated domestic violence breach was “far more troubling” however she did not read the details of the offending into the record.

She said the recent incident was troubling and hard to rationalise, and told him he now had the status of a DV offender and he if he did not change his behaviour he would find himself with harsher penalties.

Ms Morice said the recent breach was further aggravated due to the man being on a suspended sentence at the time.

He was sentenced to a 15 month probation order, and the operation period of his pre-existing suspended sentence was extended for 12 months.
