An Oakey man allegedly found with three guns that police claim were stolen from a property just the day prior has been granted bail.

Toby Charles Gillis had been charged with 12 matters including arson of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, burglary, receiving tainted property, possessing ammunition, and unlawful possession of Category A, B or M weapons following a police search of his home on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old appeared before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday via video link from the watch house to hear his solicitor Chelsea Saldumbide make an application for bail on his behalf.

Police laid the charges against Mr Gillis after the arrest of three other people on similar charges on Thursday.

Two of those three, a 40-year-old man from Allora and an 18-year-old man from Glenvale, were remanded in custody on Thursday while a Wilsonton woman aged 37 was released on bail.

However, Magistrate Louise Shephard, who had remanded those two men in custody on Thursday, said of Mr Gillis’ matters on Friday that there was no evidence in the police written objection to bail linking Mr Gillis to the majority of those charges.

She said the only evidence before her was that three weapons had been found at Mr Gillis’ residence in Oakey that were reportedly part of a large number of weapons reported stolen the day prior.

Police prosecutor Rohan Brewster-Webb said he couldn’t take the matter any further.

The court heard Mr Gillis told police he had bought the three weapons for $1000.

Ms Shephard said it was concerning that 42 weapons, including semi-automatic rifles, pump action shotguns and hand guns, reportedly stolen were out in the community and being offered for sale as submitted in the police material.

However, the Crown case against Mr Gillis had deficiencies in regard to the majority of charges, she said.

Ms Shephard granted Mr Gillis bail on condition he reside at his Oakey address, have no contact with the others charged and report to Oakey Police every Monday and Friday.

“I want you to know the police have eyes on you,” she told Mr Gillis.
