A Toowoomba man has been told he must not date any women until he addresses his anger issues after he beat two women, one of whom was heavily pregnant at the time.
Taylor Dickson fronted Toowoomba District Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to five counts of assault and one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle and wilful damage.
Crown Prosecutor Emily Coley told the court the 22-year-old was on probation when he committed the offences that were before the court on Wednesday.
The court was told Dickson started dating his first victim, an 18-year-old woman, in 2022.
She was in her third trimester of a pregnancy and carrying another man’s child.
The first assault occurred after a woman refused to have sex with Dickson and he flew into a rage and punched her in the face.
The second assault occurred while the couple were en route to a campsite and Dickson took issue with how the woman was driving.
He grabbed the steering wheel and pulled it down, before engaging the hand brake and bringing the car to a stop.
“Dickson then got out, went to her side of the car and pulled her out by her hair,” Ms Coley said.
“She landed on the bitumen head first and he left her there. He drove off without her.”
The third assault occurred in early September 2022 when the woman again refused to have sex with Dickson and he punched her in the neck.
The fourth assault occurred after the woman refused to pick him up after he had been drinking.
The pair had an argument and as the woman prepared to drive away, Dickson grabbed her phone and hit her in the face.
In December 2022, shortly after this relationship ended, Dickson started dating another woman, a 22-year-old mother with an 11-month old baby.
Ms Coley told the court Dickson moved in with the woman shortly after they started dating.
In January 2023, Dickson started kissing the woman but she asked him to stop and a fight broke out.
The court was told Dickson pushed her over.
“Her head hit a wall,” Ms Coley said.
“He got on top of her, he was screaming at her before he elbowed her in the mouth, causing bleeding.”
Dickson then put his hands around her neck and pressed his thumb into her throat.
The court was told his second victim made a complaint to police and he was arrested on February 17, 2023, before spending about 354 days in pre-sentence custody before his release on bail earlier this year.
Dickson's defence barrister told the court his client had an unremarkable upbringing and a supportive mother and sister were in court.
He added that Dickson had enrolled in a men’s behaviour change program with the Domestic Violence Action Centre, but did not appear to complete the course.
In sentencing, Justice Deborah Richards noted that while Dickson was a young man he had a shocking history of domestic violence.
“You are damaging women every time you are in a relationship,” she said.
“You need to stop being in a relationship until you can deal properly with your anger.”
Judge Richards imposed a three-year jail sentence.
After recording the 354 days of presentence custody, Judge Richards released Dickson on immediate parole.
“Commit any more domestic violence in the next two years and 11 days will see you back in jail,” she said.
