How do juries decide a verdict?

A teenager accused of being involved in a violent CBD robbery and assault that saw one victim have five teeth knocked out has been refused bail.

Reech David Deng Amol appeared from the Toowoomba watch house on Wednesday after he was charged with a number of offences on Sunday, including two counts of robbery with actual violence and two counts of deprivation of liberty. He has not been required to enter a plea to the charges.

In opposing bail, police prosecutor Anita Page said the alleged offences involved a serious amount of violence.

Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told police believe the 19-year-old and a second person ushered the alleged victims, two 26-year-old men, into a dark shopfront alcove off a Toowoomba CBD street about 3.30am on June 2 where they were allegedly held against their will.

Ms Page said it was alleged that the two victims were subjected to a violent assault for a number of minutes by Mr Amol and the co-offender, with the victims allegedly pleading for the attack to stop.

One of the victims lost five teeth, as well as suffering facial contusions, and Ms Page said he needed significant dental work with both men hospitalised.

Ms Page said the alleged assault lasted minutes, but could have gone on longer if it weren’t for a Toowoomba Regional Council employee who heard the cries for help.

In making the bail application, Mr Amol’s solicitor Alysha Jacobsen said her client had moved from Melbourne to live with his aunty and uncle in Toowoomba, and that his mother was in court to support her son.

Ms Jacobsen said her client was “strongly disputing” the charges and his involvement in the alleged assault.

In her submission Ms Jacobsen said that any property reportedly stolen was returned.

The court was also told that any risk to the community of Mr Amol committing offences could be reduced by strict bail conditions, including a nightly curfew.

Acting magistrate Roger Stark said Mr Amol presented an “unacceptable risk” to the community and his bail was refused to appear in court again on August 3.
