Police draw firearms in tense Bunnings Toowoomba West stand-off after man allegedly observed refilling gel blasters

A man may have thought he was doing the right thing when he waved his gel blasters at police to show them they were harmless, but officers did not see it that way.

A Bunnings carpark was the scene of a tense police standoff after a man took two gel blasters to the Anzac Ave store.

A 38-year-old Southbrook man allegedly attended the store about 4.30pm on Monday, and was observed allegedly adjusting a replica Glock pistol and AR15-style rifle in his vehicle by a member of the public.

Not knowing that the firearms were toys, the member of the public called triple-0.

Police attended and as they approached the man’s vehicle, he allegedly raised the replica Glock pistol in an attempt to show that it was a toy.

Darling Downs City Patrol Group Inspector Paul James said police took this to be a threat and drew their firearms.

The man surrendered and was taken into custody.

Police searched his vehicle and allegedly located a small amount of ice and a glass pipe.

He was charged with dangerous conduct with a weapon, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing drug utensils and was granted police bail to appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The was adjourned with no plea entered.
