A 17-year-old boy suffered minor injuries after he was assaulted by an offender armed with a hammer in a frightening carjacking.

Toowoomba Detective Senior Sergeant Paul McCusker said the boy was returning to his vehicle in Sherry St, Wilsonton after having left it momentarily unattended about 1.30pm on Saturday.

He arrived back at his vehicle to find an unknown male in the driver’s seat.

“The owner of the vehicle then entered the vehicle and the male offender demanded his mobile telephone and produced the hammer,” he said.

“The male offender swung the hammer hitting the victim on the shoulder.”

The victims handed over his phone and exited the vehicle, which the offender stole.

Police recovered the vehicle after it was located abandoned in Bridge St at 12am Sunday, with the victim’s mobile telephone located in a nearby street.

“The victim received bruising and tenderness to the shoulder and Toowoomba CIB continue to investigate the matter,” Sergeant McCusker said.

The offender remains at large and anyone with information about their identity or location should phone Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
