Police data has revealed the Toowoomba locations where you are most likely to have a vehicle stolen in the past six months, as numbers of the crime reach a 20-year high.
Newtown appears to be the hotspot for nicked vehicles in Toowoomba’s central suburbs, with a whopping 74 reported unlawful use of a motor vehicle offences over the past six months.
Other suburbs where cars have been reported stolen in larger numbers included Harristown, Kearney's Spring and Glenvale.
The data comes as offenders target Garden City homes in a wave of car stealings.
Car thefts charges reached a 20-year high in 2021, and 2022 is already shaping up to be another concerning year.
There have already been 525 unlawful use of a motor vehicle charges filed in the Darling Downs district up until the start of June
Police revealed last week they had deployed members of the Tactical Crime Squad in a bid to take down thieves, many just teens, who are targeting homes across the city.
Superintendent David Briese said information received from members of the public is instrumental in identifying and disrupting criminal offences.
"We know the community wants to help reduce crime in this city and the best way they can assist is by contacting the police," he said.
"If you see something, let us know so we can attend and resolve the situation."
Officers are also asking homeowners to play their part in preventing the crime.
Supt Briese said 67 per cent involving the theft of all motor vehicles in Toowoomba where offenders have taken advantage of unlocked vehicle.
"This should serve to remind everyone how important it is to ensure you take security measures with your property," he said.
